Officials turn dirt at health facility ceremony

Officials from the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Lake County Health Department and City of Umatilla broke ground on May 7 for a new health facility.

The Umatilla health facility, located at 249 E. Collins St., was closed in 2004 due to indoor air quality issues. The $4.4 million project includes a complete overhaul of the existing 4,600-square-foot structure and adding 11,000 square feet of space.

When completed in about one year, the facility will enable the Lake County Health Department to offer clinical services to the surrounding community, including family health, maternity, immunizations and specialty clinics. Added features to the new facility include exam rooms, nursing workstations, storage rooms, a laboratory and a larger parking lot.

Speaking at the ceremony were Lake County Commission Chairman Welton Cadwell, Pam Steinke, Administrator of the Lake County Health Department, Bonita J. Sorensen, Deputy State Health Officer of the Florida Department of Health and Umatilla Mayor Benita R. Martin.

The new facility was designed by the Orlando office of Harvard Jolly architects, and the construction manager for the project is R.D. Michaels Inc. of Maitland.
